Relentless Winds • Unpredictable Weather • Challenging Roads • Blowing Sand • Crocodiles – Are you up to the challenge?

SPI BikeFest brings the 5th annual King of the Causeway to deep South Texas on October 15th & 16, 2011. This two day triathlon and cycling event is sure to challenge even the most capable athlete.

TeamMcallenlogo_12-Stage Saturday Road Race – The final road race of the year in Texas. The South Texas weather makes this an ideal location for this road race. SPI BikeFest, the City of South Padre Island, and the surrounding communities pull out all the stops to make this road race challenging, exciting and safe for all participating cyclists. The day starts with a 52-mile road race through the southern-most tip of Texas and includes sprinting and climbing primes, full police & motorcycle escort, as well as race officials monitoring the course. Night time brings the annual Iron Horse Sunset Memorial Motorcycle Parade for which thousands of spectators line the street.  For the past four years, the King of the Causeway night race has led the parade through the main boulevard on the Island.  This year, we have increased the race to 15 miles starting at Morningside and Padre Boulevard.  Cyclists start on the Island, cross the causeway twice (2.2 miles each way with a steep climb of 73 feet at its peak), and cross the finish line again at Morningside and Padre Boulevard. Classifications:  Men’s & Women’s Open, Intermediate. Brought to you by SPI BikeFest, LoneStar National Bank and Team McAllen Cycling.

ROAD RACE RULES

Bicycle_World-Single_LogoSunday Bicycle Tour and Poker Run* – Cyclists set out from Schlitterbahn Waterpark on the Island, across the Causeway to the mainland for a 10, 25 or 50 mile ride and poker run through deep South Texas. The route for the tour and the South Texas winds offer great challenges to the cyclist.  As in years past, participants will be offered the chance to earn a second poker hand by accepting the Tour challenge* and returning with the item of proof for the drawing. The ride is capped off with the popular poker run back at the Convention Center with lots of great prizes and where food and beverages will be available to the participants.  Also available this year, a margarita and beer cash bar at the Convention Center door prize drawing!  Brought to you by SPI BikeFest, Lone Star National Bank and Bicycle Worlds of the Valley.

New This Year!!  The King of the Causeway Triathlon – SPI BikeFest, Lone Star National Bank and Wally’s Bicycles bring this new event to the annual SPI BikeFest Motorcycle Rally.  A short, end of season event perfect for a beginner to test the waters, or for an intermediate to advanced triathlete to finish off and cool down from a busy season. The especially short swim, although a challenge for the seasoned veteran, makes it an ideal beginner event for anyone who wants to swim in an open water environment.

The course is a 500 meter swim, 12 mile bike, and 3.2 mile run. The swim is held in the bay (by Louie's Backyard) and will be patrolled by kayak and jet ski personnel. The bike will be held on partially closed roads, police patrol, motorcycle escort and a protected lane for the cyclist. The run is a mixture of neighborhood roads and sandy off road paths.

This event also has a special relay division for athletes who aren't yet ready to make the jump to a full triathlon, or would simply like to make this into a team sport. There will be separate wave starts, finisher medals, and separate awards.

The King of the Causeway Triathlon is one of the last triathlon events in Texas for the year.  South Padre Island is the ideal place with ideal weather for this event.  You just gotta give it a tri!

King of the Causeway Challenge:

All participants who enter and complete the Saturday 2-stage road race as well as the triathlon will receive a special gift as well as bragging rights for having completed this special challenge consisting of two days of difficult racing for any level of athlete.
